Aliens Versus Predator: Requiem (Reviewed!) December 27, 2007

If you are a fan of the Aliens franchise, Predator franchise, or, like me, both, than you were probably falling out of your chair when you first heard they were making an Aliens vs Predator movie. Yeah, me too. Too bad it wasn’t so great, right? Cheap and limited story, terrible actors, and not enough, well, Aliens versus Predator! Not to mention, everyone really, really wanted Aliens and Predators running rampant through the streets; not hidden away in a pyramid thousands of feet beneath the surface in the North Pole. Boring!
That’s where the sequel, AVP: Requiem, stands to change all that. Directed by The Brothers Strauss, this new installment into the AVP series takes a fresh direction from that of Paul W.S. Anderson (who helmed AVP). You can really see the difference this time around.
Talk about wanton death and destruction. The movie doesn’t kick right into it; instead, you do get a little character development, some story building, and even a glimpse at a Predator homeworld (how awesome is that). But what’s the best part of the whole damn movie? The PREDALIEN!
Remember in AVP, the dead Predator had been implanted by a facehugger? Well of course they went ahead and built on that. The alien that ripped out of its chest is whats known as a Predalien - previously only seen in the comics and videogames. As such, the Predalien raises all hell on the ship and it ends up crash-landing on Earth. A distress signal goes out and then the movie really begins.
There are a few twists and turns you won’t be expecting in this film, and all I’ve given away here is the note about a glimpse into a possible Predator homeworld. You really need to see this movie if you’re a true Alien and/or Predator fan. There’s a few homages, and the best is saved for last. You’ll know it when you hear it - because it was the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger to have said it in the first place
Other than a fun and blood-ridden story line, the awesome power of the Predalien, and humans’ innate ability to get eaten by Aliens, AVP: Requiem delivers a movie closer to that of both the original Alien and Predator movies themselves. The colors are darker; the fine details of the monsters less descript. The Aliens stick to the darkness and hunt like the original Alien. The Predator in this film is a return to the badass, stop-at-nothing killing machine that we saw in the first Predator movie. He uses a variety of new (and old) weapons to deal a fair share of death to the Aliens.
I can’t write anything more without wanting to give away details of new equipment or other plot twists used in this movie. All I can say is I am eagerly awaiting AVP 3!
