BSN Syntha-6 Review January 3, 2008

As the only supplement I’m still taking as part of my workout regime, Syntha-6 is an essential component to body building. Its protein, people!

Two scoops of Syntha-6 gives you approximately 44 grams of protein. More than enough for one workout. Ideally, you should have 2-3 of these shakes every day and especially three on workout days. Your body needs anywhere from 80 to 180 grams of protein per day to build new muscle. Don’t starve it!

Review continued after the jump below.

One container of Syntha-6 will run you about $28 online (plus shipping). It says the container holds 30 servings, but each serving is counted as one scoop - so if you’re using the recommended two scoops, you only have 15 shots per container (if you’re a female, consider taking just one scoop at a time as recommended by the manufacturer).

So when we do the math, if you take 2 shakes a day with 2 scoops each for 30 days, that’s 120 servings!  You’d need FOUR bottles to keep up (and spend about $112/month on Syntha-6 alone). For anyone who is a true body builder, you’ll have no problem buying this stuff in bulk. For the rest of us, we don’t need quite that much.

I get away with taking, at most, two shakes a day - and that’s usually only on workout days. There are days when I don’t even take Syntha-6, but then I’m usually eating a ton of protein to compensate (like a can of tuna for lunch and some chicken breasts for dinner with mixed-grain pasta). You can figure out how to balance your protein intake with good dieting choices. It might take a little planning, but getting enough protein every day shouldn’t be a problem. When all else fails, drink some Syntha-6, or cut back to just one scoop if you’ve got a lot but not quite enough protein planned on a day to day basis.

So why not just eat a lot of foods packed with protein?

You could, but it’d be difficult to consume over 100 grams of protein a day. You’d probably spend just as much money on food as you would on a protein supplement. The other advantage to Syntha-6 and similar products is that its JUST protein - when taken after a workout, it gets metabolized much more quickly and starts building muscle faster and more efficiently than food.

Keep in mind, not all protein is the same, either. Syntha-6 contains a perfect blend of protein that is designed to build muscle. You can’t get anything better than the ingredients in this stuff. Scientifically, its a smash hit for protein-hungry muscles. Its design allows it to get absorbed quickly from the stomach and start acting on your muscles. You don’t want to waste protein, and by taking a protein supplement, you can bet on most of it getting used rather than thrown out as waste. That’s really why you’re taking a protein shake (in addition to not eating enough protein in your diet, of course).

When it comes to Syntha-6, I can tell you from personal experience that 1) it tastes fantastic and 2) it doesn’t mix quite as well as promised. Not a big deal, but there will be some chunks in it, and if you don’t get it all in your mouth, you’re wasting protein!  Try a blender when you have the time to do use one.

Let’s not forget about flavors. I tend to buy the Chocolate Milkshake flavor (the only variation of “chocolate” offered). Its great!  It doesn’t really taste like a milkshake, but I do make it with milk (4 ounces for every 1 scoop) and I actually enjoy the taste. I’ve had Strawberry Milkshake (very tasty) and Vanilla (plain old vanilla; never was a fan, but it definitely holds true to the “vanilla” taste), but my favorite is Chocolate Milkshake. If you’re worried about the extra fat and calories from using milk, stick to water. It’ll mix better and the taste won’t be too bad. I prefer milk, though.

As for the effects of Syntha-6, I’m still waiting for results. I’ve only been on it a few weeks and my weight always fluctuates so I’ll have to post again later about what its really done for my body. But going by the success I’ve had with other BSN products (Nitrix, No-Xplode, CellMass), I’m betting this is some Grade-A Protein. BSN doesn’t mess around with its supplements, and a quick search online will show you that most would agree: Syntha-6 is a great protein supplement and a welcome addition to your workout regime.

My reccomendation?  If you’re looking for a protein supplement, BSN is one that is guaranteed to taste far better than the rest (I promise, I’m extremely picky) and probably do as good a job if not better than other protein supplements (since it is a BSN product). You pay a slight price premium for it because its BSN, but hey, you get what you pay for these days.
