SimpleFit and CrossFit: Building a Better Body (like the 300!) March 15, 2007

I’ve been working out for a while now trying to build up my body. Everyone is probably in agreement that working out on a consistant, dedicated basis takes a lot of time, effort, and will to get the job done. I’m always looking for new ways of building muscle faster and cutting the fat even quicker. After seeing the kick-ass movie The 300, I wanted to learn what the actors did to get their bodies in to that kind of shape.
As it turns out, they were all conscripted into The 300 Workout. At Gym Jones, an exclusive, invite-only gym, owner Mark Twight put the actors and crew through a rigourous four-month workout to not only sculpt the actors’ bodies to perfection but to give them the range of motion and strength that should accompany such bodies. The basis for his methods appears to be the CrossFit training style. You can read more about the workout Mark Twight put the cast and crew of The 300 through over here at Digg- The 300 Workout.
CrossFit seems to be an up-and-coming method of training that involves a lot of timed, intense, and quick workouts that stress as much of the body as possible. If you just follow the Workout of the Day on their website you’ll see just how intense it is. I’m not in the kind of shape I need to be to follow most of the CrossFit workouts, and I happened to come across something else - SimpleFit.
As the name implies, its a rather simple assortment of workouts. For 3 days a week, you rotate between 3 different sets of exercises at the level appropriate to your physical condition. I started at level 3 to see how I would do and it seems like its going to be a fun ride. You may be reading over the workout and saying, “that sounds way too easy”, but you try hammering out that combination of pushups/pullups/squats for a solid 20 minutes, no stopping. I think I’ll incorporate my more traditional weight-lifting/aerobic exercises on the days I’m not doing Simplefit to maximize the potential. I will post weekly updates here that tell how many rounds I accomplish, what my timings are, and etc. I really hope to see some strong gains from this regime. All in hopes of upgrading to a CrossFit schedule at some point, of course. Make sure you watch the videos of the workouts on CrossFit!
Before I end this post, I also wanted to mention to anyone trying to build their body or just improve their health overall: Don’t eat 3 meals a day. Eat 6. More if you can. I try to maintain 6 small to moderate meals a day spaced out every 3 hours.
The reason behind this is simple: Your body needs calories to burn all day. Eating three meals results in a huge amounts of calories being thrown into the body that are either wasted or stored, neither of which is any bit useful. By spacing out your meals evenly and eating appropriate portions (just enough to fill you up), you’ll be providing everything your body needs to maintain constant energy and to rebuild muscle fiber. In turn, this will also promote a higher metabolism, allowing you to eat more of the things you enjoy and keep the weight off. And, since muscle burns more calories than fat, you’ll be shredding the fat rather quickly and replacing it with muscle.
